So far it is saving us a LOT of money
First, I am an almost 84 year old woman with minor “handyman” skills. I looked over the instructions several times, and also found a video on You Tube and viewed that. I was able to install this unit, after removing our Honeywell unit, with very little trouble. Originally, our “R” wire did not show up, so I had to take off the cover, pull out that wire, make sure it was straight and inserted firmly, and that brought success. Admittedly, it was made easier because all our wires were color coded to match the letter they had, and we had every wire we needed. The one thing I wished was that I had brought some really good “VHB” double faced tape home, and put the backer plate on with that. Our drywall is so old that the screws just rattled around. I was able to fix it with tape for the time being, but I think at some point I’ll need to remove it and reinstall the backplate more firmly with better tape. So — have no fear! I did turn off my main electrical switch just in case but other than that, just about anyone should be able to install this unit. After we got air conditioning, our Honeywell thermostat started to malfunction, and the furnace would turn on and would not turn off. Our gas bill went through the roof — about $180 when it is normally, in winter, about $60.00. I wish I would have ordered this a month ago, but I didn’t realize what the bill would be like! Obviously, the savings would have paid for the new thermostat. All that said, we all love this thermostat! It looks nice, and when you get close, you know what the temperature is. You can easily set it, and everything responds almost immediately. Our furnace has barely gone on at all, and yet it is comfortable (we are having a reasonably warm spell — not uncommon here in Southern Cal.)

Misleading and or Defective
I was SO excited to see Amazon tell me I could get this for $0 with a rebate, except that was not true. Amazon promised, incorrectly, that my utility offered a rebate, up to $100, but they do not. I think Amazon assumed my utility was Electric Company #1 when it is, in fact, another company. Company #1 does not offer service to my area, plain and simple. So, when this was delivered, I applied online and was immediately rejected for that reason. Still, since I had it, even though I only bought it based on the illusory promise of it being free after a rebate, I wanted to keep it. I installed it. It worked even though I don’t have a C-wire which makes most “smart” thermostats not possible with our boiler.Once I had it physically connected, I installed the app and tried to set it up. The *app* said that I could not use this with my 2-wire, i.e., no C-wire, setup, contradicting what Google/Amazon promised in the description, which emphasized that it works with “most” 2-wire boilers. So, I had to circumvent the app, which to be clear, was not saying anything about my heating system, but was pre-programmed to refuse to connect to any system where the user indicated having only a red and a white wire, i.e., the typical setup for hot-water boilers.Once I had lied to the app about which wires I have, so that it would continue setup, setup worked fine, but then the screen was just grey. It turned out that this unit has internal batteries that had arrived completely drained, and it took 6-10 hours (I forget how long exactly) for it to charge, which it did, slowly via the 2-wires connected to my boiler and then quicker once I realized I could remove it and charge it with a USC-C wire.NONE of that was mentioned in the instruction manual – not a word about there being batteries, about needing to charge them or about the various ways you could do so, or about how the thermostat would function in the interim. Once the unit had sufficient power to do so, it began displaying a message saying it was charging, but that was not until it had charged for several hours, so that this omission was a serious omission. And finally, after all that, it was fully charged, and I was able to get it all set up, except for the wifi, which it simply could not connect to. This is not because I have a 2-wire boiler – that has nothing whatsoever to do with wifi connectivity, and looking online, again, as I had to learn about charging it, I discovered countless people had the same issue. Some managed after many failures to get it connected, but after dozens of attempts, including following all of google’s troubleshooting advice, I had no choice but to give up because clearly, this is google’s poor software and or hardware (software, I suspect), rearing its ugly head again. Which is a real shame because I’ve wanted a Nest since it was a brand-new, not yet owned by Google device and when I finally got one, it ended up a nightmare, not a dream.
