Google Nest Thermostat – Smart Thermostat for Home – Programmable Wifi Thermostat – Charcoal

I was looking for a basic, smart thermostat for our cabin so I could monitor the temperature over the winter in the event of heating issues or someone kicking the door in and it freezing inside; and also, because we turn the heat way down while not there, I could turn it back up on the way there and have it already warm when we arrive. As I read reviews on this thermostat, which I kept going back to when I reviewed others, it seemed like most complaints were about needing a “c” wire to the thermostat and Google not disclosing that. I can’t speak to that as I’m not sure it’s absolutely necessary, I knew nothing of wiring a thermostat to a furnace. I went into it though assuming I needed a “c” wire and researched different ways to do it. There were other complaints like displayed temperature inaccuracies, but at the end of the day I went with the basic Google Nest in sand color (looks pink to me). I’m glad I spent the time researching ahead of time and, so far, glad I didn’t listen to the “don’t buy this product” reviews. Does exactly what I want it to do, easy to use, displays perfectly accurate temperature, and was easy to install (again, glad I researched quite a bit and was prepared). Now for my install experience: Just for the record, my cabin furnace is heat only, so I only really needed 2 low voltage wires from the thermostat to the furnace. The existing cable had 3 wires however, one of which (the green one) was not hooked up at either end. FYI, take the advice of the “how to” videos and take a picture of the wire locations on the old thermostat before removing them, and make sure the furnace breaker is off too. The green wire, as I researched, is usually for operating the furnace fan separate from when it’s on for heating or cooling, something I, and probably most people, don’t use. The white and red wires were hooked to their corresponding letter coded (R&W) spaces on the thermostat and furnace. I had purchased a plug-in 24v transformer with a long set of wires, based on my previous research, to use as the “c” wire, which I learned supplies power to the thermostat. I intended on plugging it into a nearby outlet, running the wire alongside some doorframe trim, which would hide the wire, and into the wall behind the new thermostat. This, I think, would have worked just fine. I also learned though, from watching another “how-to” video just before I started the project, that all furnaces have a 24v connection space along with where all the other thermostat wires would go. So I just hooked the unused green wire to the “c”, or 24v, spot on the furnace and to the “c” connector on the Nest thermostat. *The Nest comes with wire identifying stickers and I did label this wire on both ends to indicate it’s now the power wire. Once the wiring was done, turned the breaker back on and followed the install directions from the Google Home app. The only minor issues I had was that the display was in Celsius, not Fahrenheit, and it took me awhile to figure out that this needed to be changed via the phone app, not the thermostat. There may be a way, but I couldn’t figure that out. Also, was a little nervous because of the previous reviews I read when the initial temperature displayed about 4-5 degrees above the actual temperature, but by the time I cleaned everything up, it was right on. In Google’s defense, it did indicate it takes a little bit to adjust itself. Very happy with it and glad I picked this one-so far anyhow.

Very disappointed.
I purchased the Google Nest thermostat 16 months ago. I had high hopes for this thermostat. It got top rated reviews and I was hoping for a smooth integration with my Alexa system. The trouble began at installation. I couldn’t get it working. I’m very handy and I enjoy dealing with electrical and electronic systems. I struggled with this thermostat installation until I had to call customer service for assistance. The first technician had me reconnect the wires (incorrectly) and reset the thermostat to no avail. I got handed off to another technician and this one got me to put the wires back and do a factory reset. Anyway, getting the thermostat to actually control my ac system was a “whole thing!” This thermostat would control my system with temperature presets but would lose the connection with Alexa. When this happened none of the schedules could be followed and I had no remote control through my phone or through Alexa or even The Google Home app. When I attempted to connect to the thermostat, Alexa would say; “Living room thermostat is unresponsive. Please check your power supply and your Wi-Fi or router!” None of my other “smart” devices were having problems so these instructions seemed pointless! The connection would usually be lost daily and sometimes the connection lasted for only a few hours. The only way that I could regain control was to physically go to the thermostat, scroll to settings and “Restart” the thermostat. When on vacation, I like to keep my ac running because I have pets and my pet sitters come over twice a day. After I left. The thermostat went to “Eco” because Alexa sensed that we were “Away”. That’s fine but I couldn’t override that because the thermostat was (you guessed it) “Unresponsive!” After 16 months of this I finally decided to do the dreaded “Factory Reset” which I had been avoiding because I would have to start from the beginning on programming. Well, after a while, I finally got it back on line, and was pretty confident that I had fixed it. Four hours later. “The living room thermostat is unresponsive. Please check…” I surfed through the Internet and found that this was not an isolated issue. In fact, I found that Google Customer Service would send a free replacement if their tech support could not resolve the (known) connectivity issue. I then spoke to my son and told him about the possible free replacement. He simply said, “ So you are going to replace the thermostat with the same kind and very possibly still have the same issues?” I didn’t have a response. So I finally decided to purchase an Amazon thermostat. There was no secondary app to install so the connectivity should be seamless. I bought for 18% off on “Prime Days” sale so it was considerably less expensive than the Google Nest. I won’t go into the product review of the Amazon thermostat here. But, I will say that I am very pleased with my new thermostat. I have not lost connectivity since start-up. I regret that it took me way too long to replace the Google Nest with a reliable thermostat. The Google Nest may be a top rated thermostat but in my personal experience, the secondary app created a problem with connectivity with Alexa making it unreliable. Towards the end of my struggles with the Nest, I was “Restarting” it daily and sometimes twice a day. In fact, it would surprise me if Alexa would ever be able to tell me the inside temperature of my home! Hey Google. As for your thermostat replacement offer, Thanks, but NO THANKS!

If you rely on apps, this is for you. Adjusting at the actual stat on the wall in person isn’t the most user friendly tho. There’s no markings on the side that tell you where to touch to change between heat and cool, warmer cooler etc. If you’re intuitive you’ll still be fine, if you’re not intuitive playing with tech and you don’t want to use the app on your phone when you want things warmer or cooler then you’ll probably hate it. Be aware. Personally I love the app, find it extremely convenient and user friendly even for people who don’t like tech, and in the last year have touched my actual stat zero times. I don’t like the look of the other metal ringed nest model but that one does have a typical hands on adjustment style so consider that if you don’t like apps and using your phone.I really like this faded rose color in person but biggest complaint is if you have to cover up old screw holes, unpainted area, or over cut hole from old stat and need to use an optional backplate there’s no matching backplate color. This rose directly on the wall is very nice, but put it on a white plastic backplate and I find it looks tacky. If you need a backplate then get matching white stat.Compared to any other thermostat option currently available I would still make the same purchase and get this nest version again
